Seat context — Tarneit›
Tarneit is a safe Labor seat in Melbourne's outer south-west covering Tarneit, Truganina and Hoppers Crossing in the north of the City of Wyndham. Dylan Wight, a former Australian Manufacturing Workers' Union organiser, won it in 2022 with 46.6% of first preferences and 62.3% two-party-preferred against the Liberals' Preet Singh, a margin of about 12 points, and is recontesting. The Tally Room notes community frustration over infrastructure lagging population growth, including overcrowding at Tarneit station and the need for a West Tarneit station. The 2026 field found is seven candidates: Wight, the Liberals' Venkat Ram Upparlapalle, the Greens' Rifai A. Raheem, the Victorian Socialists' Leah Van Keulen, the West Party's Andrew Elsbury, the Animal Justice Party's Maurita Rahn and the New Democrats' Jaydeep Patel. Wikipedia's 2026 candidates table has the Liberal and Greens labels shifted for this seat.

Platform
Where they stand, issue by issue — grounded in 2026 Victorian polling, not assumed. Every position is tagged with how we know it.
Standing up for families, supporting small businesses, advocating for more local jobs, improving local infrastructure and services, and ensuring Tarneit's voice is strongly represented at every level of government.
No candidate-specific policy statement beyond that profile paragraph was found; the detail below is One Nation Victoria's statewide policy booklet, not his own words.
What Victorians say matters most
5 poll-led issuesCost of living and crime have ranked 1st or 2nd in every Victorian poll since mid‑2025, with debt and housing close behind — see schema §3 for the polling this grouping is based on (DemosAU, Ipsos Issues Monitor, Roy Morgan). The 0-10 'priorityScore' on each candidate's issue entries is NOT a measure of true importance or an independent ranking of what a candidate actually cares about. It reflects how much detail and specificity exists in what that candidate has actually said publicly on that issue -- a named policy mechanism and a verified voting record score higher than a one-line stated priority, regardless of the issue's real-world weight. Render this distinction in the UI wherever the score appears; do not label it just 'Priority' without the qualifier.
Cost of living
Party platform: cut land tax increases on rental properties, lift the payroll tax threshold, abolish the 10 per cent stamp duty on home, contents and car insurance, and remove stamp duty on new business entities for 12 months.
This is the party platform rather than a statement by Villagonzalo himself.
Crime and community safety
Party platform: "Stronger Police. Faster Justice. Safer Communities." It covers more police, more court capacity and corrections beds, and escalating sentences for serious and repeat violence.
No personal statement on crime was found.
Housing affordability and supply
Party platform: review the fees and taxes that add to new-home costs, wind back land tax increases on rentals, release under-used government land, set a legal clock on planning approvals, free up granny flats and spare-room rentals, and raise the foreign purchaser duty.
The same platform ties housing pressure to net overseas migration. His own profile is silent on housing.
State government debt and fiscal management
Party platform: rebuild the budget by cancelling the Suburban Rail Loop, scrapping the Statewide Treaty and cutting executive-level public service roles while protecting frontline staff.
Infrastructure and public transport delivery
Says he is committed to "improving local infrastructure and services" for Tarneit, without naming projects.
Party platform: cancel the Suburban Rail Loop, fund regional roads and rail duplication, and electrify the Melton line.
Also on the record
6 substance issuesThese don't top “biggest issue” polling, but carry real 2026 policy weight and genuine differences between parties.
Education and training
Party platform: school vouchers, more trade schools, and a return to core literacy and numeracy. No personal statement found.
Health and healthcare access
Party platform: more nurses and doctors on wards, tackling ambulance ramping through whole-of-hospital flow, and protecting regional hospitals. No personal statement found.
Urban planning and housing density
Party platform: require genuine community consultation before high-rise development is imposed on established suburbs. No personal statement found.
Climate and energy transition
Party platform: scrap net-zero targets and subsidies, cancel VNI West and other large transmission projects, back coal upgrades, reverse the new-home gas connection ban and repeal Victoria's nuclear ban.
A local outlet notes his long-running advocacy for more tree canopy in Melbourne's west may sit awkwardly beside One Nation's forestry policies.
Treaty and First Nations affairs
Party platform: scrap the Statewide Treaty and abolish Gellung Warl and its legislated funding. No personal statement found.
Regional and rural Victoria
Party platform includes a "Stronger Regions" package (regional roads, rail, water, forestry). Not a focus of his own material, as Tarneit is a metropolitan seat.

Campaign logistics
Endorsements & Donations
Per the VEC's funding guidance for Victorian state elections (accessed 2026-10-11), a candidate is eligible for public funding if they receive at least 4% of first-preference votes in their contest, or are elected.
Funding is then calculated against the candidate's audited campaign-expenditure statement and vote count, up to legislated maximums.
